Tom Hanks has (In my opinion) always been a great actor. I try never to look beyond any actor's work due to the fact it will most likely ruin my opinion of them. I have just finished watching "A man called Otto." Yes, I know it's been out since last year, but I must admit to it being brilliantly done! True, it is for a niche audience, yet it plays out perfectly for today's divided society. Otto is a miserable man, whom we come to understand shortly into the picture. Yet, he is a complicated individual who appears gruff and bigoted on the exterior--because he is--yet he is a man who has not had the best life and had lost his one and only love just shortly before the movie takes place. Through a multitude of flashbacks, the story unfolds, and we get to see the full character of Otto. We initially dislike and even hate Otto, yet we learn to accept and understand him, and in the end, he becomes aware of his shortcomings and begins to 'adapts, and make amends.
The writers of this movie have done a great job in incorporating today's social problems, checking all the proper 'equity boxes' while still making an enjoyable picture! It leads me to think of a newly added Goodreads friend who is working on a Women's psychological fiction novel. She has given me the privilege of helping her with the manuscript--in an editorial sense--asking for me to beta-read her first novel, and I must say that in it, she has incorporated a somewhat "Otto-esque" character; herself checking all the proper boxes necessary for today's literary society.
Bravo to both of them, I say. Simply, Bravo!
